This Rare but Simple Skill Will Make You Instantly More Likable

Apply it and watch your conversation skills skyrocket.

The most captivating people have one thing in common.

They’re good listeners.

But good listeners are rare. In conversation, you’re probably more self-centered than you realize. If you’re always trying to figure out how to reply while someone else is talking, then you aren’t listening, you’re debating.

Fortunately, becoming a better listener is as simple as replacing a few bad habits. But most importantly, you need to be present.

Here are some simple practices that will help you become a better listener.

Most people — even self-proclaimed shy people — love to hear themselves talk. It’s human nature to express yourself and want to be heard.

Use this to your advantage. Let the person with whom you are speaking do most of the talking.

We’ve all known people who didn’t seem to know when to shut up. Don’t be one of them.

A Steven Covey said, “Most people do not listen with the intent to understand; they listen with the intent to reply.” Don’t worry about what you will say. Easier said than done, I know, but it’s the cornerstone of great listening.

When you mirror someone’s body language, even in a small way, it builds rapport. The same thing happens when you mirror someone’s words.

If you want someone to know you’re listening to them, repeat back the last two to three words they said.

For example, your friend might say “I had a terrible day. My boss is such a jerk.” You can mirror their speech by saying “Such a jerk.”
