US Soccer has announced that BJ Callaghan will serve as head coach of the USMNT during the upcoming Gold Cup and CONCACAF Nations League. The former assistant takes over from Anthony Hudson. Hudson is leaving for another opportunity, but there’s no indication what that is. Callaghan is crucial not the permanent head coach of the USMNT. He will remain the side’s second interim manager following the expiration of Gregg Berhalter’s contract after the 2022 World Cup.

Callaghan is the longest-serving member of the USMNT coaching staff. His four years as an assistant to both Berhalter and Hudson give him more knowledge of the squad than anyone else. So, given the proximity of both the Gold Cup and Nations League final this summer, he can quickly adapt to the role. Five months of that was under Anthony Hudson, which American football sports director Matt Crocker says was a pivotal fact in his decision to take Callaghan to the next level.

Callaghan first joined the Federation in 2019. At the time, he was a strategy analyst. Then US Soccer promoted him to assistant coach ahead of the Nations League and Gold Cup finals in 2021. Of course, the USMNT won both games with Callaghan on the staff.

“Together we have built a strong culture and a strong understanding of how we want to play, and we expect to build on that progress,” said Callaghan. “Our goal is clear: to defend both of our Concacaf titles.”

While BJ Callaghan will defend the two most recent USMNT titles, it is important to remember that he is not officially the permanent head coach of the team. Instead, he is the second interim head coach in the past six months.

Success on the pitch could make Matt Crocker more inclined to make this interim switch permanent. Hudson made the case when he took over Folarin Balogun and led the USMNT to the Nations League semi-finals. Hudson had a record of two wins, two draws and a loss against Serbia in his five matches. He would, recently reported, remain eligible to succeed in these two tournaments. Still, the nameless opportunity for Hudson swung him away.

That said, US Soccer has indicated in its press release that a search for head coaching is underway. U.S. Soccer President Cindy Parlow Cone discussed the delayed hiring process for the squad since Brian McBride and Earnie Stewart left as general manager and athletic director. The plan was to fill the role of sporting director, which it did with Matt Crocker. However, the search for coaching seems to drag on.

Callaghan will put his name in the hat in these two competitions. That starts with a Nations League semi-final against Mexico on June 15, which is just over two weeks away. Then the Gold Cup starts on June 24, just six days after the conclusion of the Nations League.
